Deuteronomy 8:2
Through my season in the wilderness, I wrote...sometimes in anger, sometimes in despair, and other times with renewed hope. Join me on this 40-day journey as we walk through the emotional highs and lows to ultimately find peace in the purpose of the desert. It is more than just mere survival...
"I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." - John 16:33

I should have been better prepared but crumbled when the trials and sorrows came. In this desert season, I frequently asked, why? I found refuge and comfort in my quiet time with God and His promise never to abandon me.
I learned so much as I walked and talked with God. In the chapters of this book, I have pulled together some of the lessons and revelations I gathered as I wandered in the wilderness and invite you to join me on a journey as we consider the four phases in the wilderness and ponder some hard questions.
Reflection – Why me and why this?
Reaffirmation – What do you know for sure?
Repentance – What’s love got to do with it?
Revival – Have you found what you’re looking for?
In the hard times, people would often ask me how I was doing, and my default response would be to smile and say, "I am alive and kickin'." But, what if the reason for the wilderness is more than just mere survival? What if it is a path to your revival?
What if at the end of this journey, you are not only alive and kickin', but can say "I am Revived and Kickin'"

Joel de Jesus was born and raised in South Africa. He qualified and registered as a Chartered Accountant and started a career in auditing, financial management, and business. He was a successful entrepreneur before deciding to immigrate with his young family to the United States.
His American dream soon became a nightmare as he experienced setback after setback. In addition to the challenge of moving a young family across the globe, he also had to face business and financial failure, job loss, self-deportation and struggles with depression and self-harm. But this was just the beginning, as he soon found himself navigating the uncertain life path once his wife was diagnosed with a life-threatening GBM brain tumor.
In his struggles, he felt God's calling to prepare for life in ministry and duly enrolled to study an MDIV at the Reformed University. He graduated with honors and as valedictorian in 2024.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for a local church and is also involved with leading middle-school students.
Joel is a die-hard Liverpool FC fan and spends his free time watching and following them. He loves hiking and supporting local performing arts.
In this interview with Rahal Agarwal of Hamilton Mill Church, Joel and Brenda share their journey from immigration challenges to facing a dire health crisis. Discover how their faith was tested and strengthened through unexpected hardships and a miraculous prognosis extension influenced by a biblical story. Learn from their experiences about the power of prayer, the importance of community support, and finding hope in the most challenging times.
